The Desert in Spring

My lovely friend, Mary, is–like me–into hiking and photography. She’s the one who doesn’t mind going to photograph butterflies 134 times a year. (Speaking of which, Mary, we need to get back there soon.)

Anyway, Mary also keeps me notified as to when the desert is in bloom. Here are some pictures I took on several hikes with her that I never got around to compiling until now.

Who knew the desert could be so green?

And so yellow?

And so purple?

Here are some close-ups of that yellow

Cacti flowers might be my favorite, though. Who knew that saguaro had such giant flowers?

Poor ocotillo–missed your bloom. Next time.

And did I mention that every year, a horned owl makes its nest in a saguaro near Mary’s house? Not easy to photo, but here she is.
